He followed with a cardiac and thoracic surgery fellowship at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

As a cardiac surgeon, Dr. Spiers introduced innovative surgical techniques to the fields of heart and vascular surgery, often using existing and emerging technology in new ways. He was among the first US surgeons to perform “keyhole” cardiac surgery, in addition to developing novel techniques for the endovascular treatment of peripheral vascular disease. He oversaw the development and redesign of several cardiovascular programs, determining the needs of systems and tailoring the clinical models to fit infrastructure and ongoing needs.

His medical board certifications included the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and the American Board of Vascular Medicine. When a hand injury ended his career in the operating room, Dr. Spiers went on to pursue a new professional calling in health law and policy. He graduated the University of Houston Law Center in Houston, Texas, and currently leads the Spiers Group. His healthcare expertise coupled with his legal insight, strategic thinking, and vision, helps clients and partners identify and grow markets for various healthcare related businesses.

His clientele includes physicians and venture groups that build brick and mortar facilities such as urgent care, imaging, surgery centers, and laboratory facilities. He also works closely with clients seeking to develop laboratory tests, medical and surgical tools, medical apps, and other biotechnology to upend the health care status quo.

Dr. Spiers is actively involved on the Advisory Board of the national health nonprofit HealthCorps and its national Texas Two-Step: Save A Life Campaign, which provides free hands-only CPR training. Dr. Spiers is also on the Houston Methodist Hospital’s Surgical Innovations Task Force in the Department of Surgery. He is an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 55 Boy Scouts of America in Houston.
